Who ever thought that getting rid of the Westboro Batshits would be as simple as offering them a free ride to Iraq to protest against ISIS? Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of inDUHviduals! Can you say “natural selection”?
This is probably the best explanation of this going around. It is lengthy but highly worth watching.
“God is unnecessary or at best redundant.” Great quote and well demonstrated in the more than an hour lead up.

There has long been a scientific debate about what caused all of the extinctions that just seemed to follow humans wherever we went. Some said climate changes, despite the same species of animals having survived about a half dozen such changes previously. To me it has long been obvious that those arguing that we were innocent were simply insufficiently misanthropic and were in denial. Most scientists from whom we hear tend to be human themselves after all.
Now there’s a new study showing, of course, that we’re guilty as charged on all counts. And, this is just the relatively large species. It’s not even counting all the cute little critters we bulldoze over before we even know they’re there. OK, the speciescides referenced here predate bulldozers. So, maybe we didn’t kill off as many little species when we were still using clovis point weaponry, not as many as we are now anyway.
Anyone still wondering why I hate our species?
Sorry if it bothers anyone that I’m posting two Katie Goodman videos on the same day. I had never heard of her before, but heard her live last night.
She does a bit too much on mom & kids for my taste, being child-free myself. But, most of her audience is likely doing the parent thing. And, so is she. So, it makes sense.
Some of her songs are really priceless. Check out this one regarding homophobia. She even manages to cite an actual scientific study in the song. Then she gets into all of the anti-gay politicians who are actually gay, or at least bisexual.
I hope the good folks at wordpress don’t get upset that I didn’t put in an ass-sterisk. Does anyone really think the asterisk obscures the word sufficiently that it suddenly becomes OK? For that matter, does anyone really think it’s not OK even without the asterisk? It’s just a word. Get over it. Anyway, onto a song with which almost everyone would agree, even if we don’t agree about exactly what is fucked up or what unfucking it up might mean.
Yes, the video is 48 minutes long. It’s worth it. I’ll wait for others to comment, if any bother to watch the whole thing, before adding my $0.02. Seriously, do watch it. It’s well worth the time. And, I don’t say that about a lot of 48 minute videos.
I’m creating a new word. Let’s see if it takes off.
1. A human being who thinks with an organ of the size and complexity of a single lentil bean, a living dal.
Note that a young earth fundalentilist only has half a lentil and is twice as dangerous.
The tax subsidy for clergy, one of the echoes of McCarthyism, may finally be being put to rest. A couple of the others that survived to this day are “In God We Trust”, which was not our country’s motto until 1956, and “under God”, which was added to the pledge of allegiance in 1954.
These two still stand as a reminder that the embarrassing period of McCarthyism with its fight against the “godless communists”, and persecution of many innocent people in the entertainment industry in particular, is not over yet. However, ending the tax subsidy for clergy, that was implemented at the same time, also in obvious violation of the establishment clause of the first amendment, is a powerful step in the right direction.
I added the S since I maintain that Christianity with God/Yahweh, Jesus, The Holy Ghost (the three never tied together as a trinity in the Bible), Holy Mary Mother of God (really??!!?), Satan/Beelzebub/Lucifer, and a whole bunch of angels, saints, cherubim, seraphim, incubi, and succubi, is clearly polytheism. Satan, in particular, is so powerful that God seems unable to zap Him into oblivion, making him a god of equal power to Yahweh.
Anyway, on to Sam Harris’ great speech. Note the more subtle unspoken references to, at least, “In God We Trust” on our money (3:15), Book of Mormon (4:34), faith healing (4:37), Sister Act (4:44), and Monty Python (6:02).
Note also that Sam Harris points out that God is impotent or evil. I prefer the term omnimpotent since our laws of physics show no signs of occasional tampering by any deity. Therefore, for God to remain undetectable by science, as is his wont, he must remain completely and utterly impotent in every possible way with respect to any effect on the observable universe. Therefore, the correct term is omnimpotent. This is my own term that I am trying to define and spread as a meme. Feel free to use it with or without credit to me.
A great video from Bill Maher.
Has anyone actually seen these phony $10 bills? note that if these fake $10 bills are close enough to fool anyone for a second, they’re probably illegal. They must legally be not only one-sided, as these are, but must also be either smaller than 75% or greater than 150% of the size of actual money.
I’d love it if these are close enough to get the shitheads that made them arrested for counterfeiting.
Of course, as an atheist, I do not believe in hell. So, clearly I believe no one will burn in it. However, by their own religious beliefs, it is easy to show that Christians are not following their Bible and will thus “burn in hell” forever and ever with fire and brimstone and gnashing of teeth and all the rest.

I agree! Reagan was an excellent leader who changed the paradigm. We’ve been following his voodoo economics and deregulation for 32 years with the result of the complete destruction of the American economy. Yes, Ronald Reagan changed everything in the U.S. to the point where a bill like Graham-Leach-Bliley could pass with bipartisan support. That created the current great bank depression that we are still stuck in the middle of. It created the conditions that led to the exploding income inequality in this country. It’s time to recognize Reagan for what he was, the original tea-bagger.
Ronald Reagan is single-handedly responsible for getting the Christian
wrong Right to unknowingly worship an atheist named Ayn Rand and to become as patently un-Christian as it is possible to be. The Ayn-Randian Christian Right now believes that Jesus rode into town on a dinosaur wielding an AK-47 to heal the sick who could afford his care and to deport those who did not have citizenship papers.
It would be laughable if not for the utter destruction of America that Reagan has caused over the last 32 years.
I’d give it a try. I’m not a vegan. But, if I can get decent meat without having to kill anyone (or have someone else kill someone on my behalf), I’d go for it. Anyone else?
I don’t really have much to add to this very well written article. Let’s see where the comments take us, if this gets any. Please read the full article before posting since I’ve not added anything of my own. Thanks.
Would Christians tolerate this from atheists? I doubt it.
Would Christians really resort to breaking a commandment from their God in an effort to put down atheists? Apparently yes.
Would mainstream Christians stand up and condemn the extremists in their ranks for their lawbreaking and commandment-breaking? The silence is deafening.
What about the mainstream media reports of such incidents? (a cricket chirps)
But, the first amendment guarantees our right to free speech, right? Not if police won’t enforce infringements upon those rights.
Moderate Christians: Stand up to this sort of thing. Show us some outrage that your Christian brethren would act this way. Prove your Christian values. Or, have you already done so with your silence?
I must say that I find it quite incredible that inside the very short squeak of a prairie dog is a complete sentence of the form “Danger, a thin human in a yellow shirt is approaching the colony.”
First let me state that the victims and their families of this explosion and of the recent explosions in Boston have my deepest sympathy and condolences.
Wednesday’s fire came one day after the 66th anniversary of the worst industrial accident in American history—the Texas City disaster, another fertilizer explosion that left 581 people dead when a French vessel hauling ammonium nitrate caught fire.
Old Testament quote, emphasis mine (thanks to Mechon Mamre for the RaMBaM translation):
22 And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow, he shall be surely fined, according as the woman’s husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.
23 But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.
This clearly states that the fetus was not a life. In fact, it indicates that a miscarriage could be caused without causing harm. The loss of the fetus can be compensated by mere money. After that, if there is harm, it is life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, ….
First, let me be clear. I am not joking about this. I am being as serious as an atheist who believes that real sin lies only in harming others can be on the subject. For religious readers, if I have any, I hope this encourages thought and dialog. I welcome all serious responses regardless of whether we agree on the topic.
So, here are my points about why I believe abstinence is sinful from both a biblical standpoint and more importantly to me why abstinence only education and the encouragement of abstinence pledges and the like are inherently sinful.
